A steel-lined, wire-studded tree can look very much like a regular tree, but that’s because it’s being treated with high-strength steel studding.
“It’s an industrial process that involves cutting through steel stud,” says Chris Smith, the president of the Australian Woodland Council, which advocates for woodlands and forests.
“And it’s very expensive to do it right, so they’re very high-tech things.
It’s also quite expensive to grow.”
The result is that the steel stud is a very thin layer of fibreglass and concrete, sandwiched between two layers of wood.
The steel is a composite material, with the concrete layer being made of cement.
The concrete layer is then wrapped around the wood and used as a structure.
It takes three to five hours to make a stud, and is a long-term process, meaning it takes around a decade to produce one tree.
That’s the reason wood-farming is still around in Australia.
“Steel stud is used for a lot of things in the industry,” Smith says.
“For example, for concrete, it’s used to build walls around a building.
So, you get that thicker, stiffer concrete. “
Also, the concrete that’s used in the steel-framed houses is usually much thicker than a typical concrete that you can buy on the street.

“The timber itself, if you look through the wood, you can see how much steel is in there, and then you see the concrete is made of steel,” Smith explains.
“So, the structure of the house is also very, much stronger than it would be with a steel frame.
So steel stud provides the strength to support that structure.”
But how does it work?
The process for producing steel stud starts with a concrete block that is a part of the structural steel.
Then, the steel is melted down, and the concrete and the wood are mixed together.
The wood and concrete then sit in a furnace, which heats them up, and creates a steel core.
The process takes around 10,000 hours to complete.
That is a lot longer than the time it takes to produce a conventional steel frame house.
And that’s what makes steel stud so popular.
“You see it in a lot more houses than you would expect,” Smith said.
“Because steel is so lightweight and flexible, it can be made in a matter of minutes.”
But steel stud also has other uses.
The tree’s wood and steel are bonded together to make up the base of the tree, and this can be used as insulation.
“That’s really a very lightweight, durable material,” Smith explained.
“To do that, you need a very strong foundation.
“A foundation like that, that’s a very good thing to have, because that gives you stability, and that allows you to make more structures from that timber.””
